Week 8 Schedule and Update
Hello Parents and Students,
I really enjoyed meeting many of you last week at our Parent/Teacher Conferences. Your kind words, support and encouragement meant the world to me. Thank you!
Last week was a lot of fun with our coin drive, Crazy Hair Day (see photo section the blog), It's A Job Unit and a very fun Gecko Time. Thank you to everyone for working hard and having a great attitude!
Just as a reminder, any late work is always accepted but I will have to penalize your students effort grade. If your student has not handed in their book report yet, I need it ASAP. With 140 book reports to grade, it will take me at least a week, recorded and handed back, so please be patient.
Here are a few dates to add to your calendar for this month:
October 17th: Book Orders Due (just click on link on the blog or send in a check)
October 18th & 19th: FALL BREAK
October 23rd-25th: CRT Prep Testing (details to come)
October 24th: Book Report Due (your student's choice of book and type of report)
This week, we will be continuing our "It's A Job" Unit by learning more parts of speech and beginning our group posters. All the work will be completed in class. See the blog entry ("Santa Clara Flood Victims") about the writing activity our class will do to help students in Henryville, Indiana. They will be bringing a form home for you to sign, please do so and return it as soon as you can.
As always, please contact me by email (rrobins@lavaridge.net) or call me at the (652-4742) with any questions or concerns. It's going to be a great week!

Raising Money For Santa Clara Flood Victims
I announced to students that on Tuesday, September 25th, we would have a one-day in-class coin drive and I would match whatever the students raised. There was also an extra incentive given that the class who donated the most money would receive a piece of candy AND get to personally deliver all the money to the office. I feel strongly that we should care for others in our community and always look for ways to help. I was so very proud of my students, they donated $43.35; as promised, I matched their donation for a grand total of $89.00!! I was so proud of such a great group of students who care about other people and who want to help. We were able to facilitate our school's personal goal of $2,500 to help those in our community!
Another cool connection came on Wednesday, when we actually took the donated funds down to the office. We read in our Scholastic Magazine "Scope" about students in Henryville, Indiana who suffered two back-to-back devastating tornadoes earlier this year. Their school was demolished and many students lost their homes and belongings. Henryville is in the southwest corner of Indiana, just as we are located in the same corner of Utah. Just as we helped members of our own community, we can help the students of Indiana as well. Scholastic has a writing contest asking students to write a paragraph about what they read in the magazine. For each entry submitted, Scholastic will send a book to Henryville for their library. All students will do this writing assignment on Monday. Watch for an entry form you will need to sign to allow your child to participate in the contest. What a marvelous way to help out students from another community!
Here are cups of coins where the students donated.
5th period won with $17.23!! They had a great time going to the office and delivering all the money in individual cups and seeing the secretaries smile!

Week 7 Update and Schedule
Hello Everyone,
I'm excited for another awesome week with 143 of the best 7th graders in the school! There is a lot going on this week you should be aware of:
1. Book-to-Film Book Reports are due on Wednesday, September 26th. Please see an earlier post for the details. Students will need to attach the 2 yellow Pre-Writing Venn Diagrams to their book report form. I'm looking forward to reading them! Remember, those who turn work in early will receive an additional entry into the monthly raffle and a candy!
2. Parent/Teacher Conferences are Wednesday and Thursday from 3-6:30pm...come in anytime and meet with me. I realize not everyone can come, but I'd LOVE to meet as many of you as I can and discuss how we can help your student improve. The school will be sending information home this week with additional detail. The Scholastic Book Fair will also be set up with the Little Theater. They have some fantastic, and affordable, books so check it out!
3. It's A Job Unit begins this week. It's a fun way to teach parts of speech and paragraphs in the context of exploring jobs and really getting students thinking about their future. This unit is an important one, equipping the students with knowledge of parts of speech and writing paragraphs. Not only does this fulfill requirements of the Common Core and prepare students for CRT testing, but it gives students the foundation for becoming articulate writers. Regardless of the career they may choose, the ability to write well can ONLY help them succeed.
I'll be introducing parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, etc.) by having students fill out a foldable and watching clips from "School House Rock" to help them remember what each part of speech does. It's going to be a fun week!
4. Utah-in-the-News: The previous post lists who has Utah-in-the-News this week. Remember, students need to find an article in Utah, staple it to the back of the Utah-in-the-News form and summarize the article in a paragraph using their own words. Please be prepared on your day to present!
Just a reminder that I am available to help students before and after school. If students miss a day, they need to check the blog or their planners to see what they missed then come talk to me before or after school (there isn't time in class for me to show students what they miss during class).
Please email, call or meet with me if there are any questions. It's been such a great year so far and I am enjoying every day with my students!

Important Information on Late Work & Planners
I've been a little worried lately about amount of late work which has been coming in. I talked to the students on Friday and reminded them that, in the real world, being late is not acceptable. Consistently arriving late to work will get you fired, paying bills late yield large consequences, etc. It is my goal to teach them organization and time-management skills which will benefit them throughout their lives.
As stated in the course disclosure, I will accept late work. However, student can expect to effort points from now on as a consequence for turning in work late. I have not taken away effort points so far but considering the amount of late work lately, I will be taking away effort points for late work from now on.
If your student is sick or there are family circumstances that lead to late work, I am totally reasonable and I will work with you and your student; just let me know.
Poor effort grades result in a "U" which leads to losing the privilege of attending Enrichment Gecko Time and possibly missing out on the 7th grade party, etc. These are consequences I would not want your student to have.
As a reminder, students are required to read 30 mins. a day, 5 days a week. These minutes need to be recorded in their planner with a parent signature along with recording our class schedule. These planner checks are worth 10 points and are very important. If a student consistently receives a low score or a "0" on their planner checks, they will receive a "U". Consistently reading at home leads to improve reading comprehension, which is another vitally important life skill.
Please encourage your student to turn in their work on time and complete their planners each week. I am rewarding "Robins Reward" tickets for our monthly raffle to students who turn in work early or receive a "10" on their planner checks. I really believe that teaching students to be on-time and responsible today will lead to a successful future for them. Thank you for your support!

Week 6 Update
Thank you for checking the blog, each week I will post an up-to-date schedule so parents and students a like will know what is happening in our Language Arts classes.
Just as a reminder, the Book-to-Film Book Report is due September 26th. Students have all made the book report form, have received directions and are free to begin working on it. I will schedule some time in class to work on it but the bulk of the work needs to be done at home. This assignment allows your student to demonstrate their knowledge of compare and contrast and story/plot elements. Encourage your student to finish their book, watch their movie and begin work soon. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
This week will be a transition between units. We will wrap-up our Book to Film unit, which has focused on Story and Plot Elements as well Compare/Contrasting two types of media (book and film), by taking a Post-Test to assess student understanding. The students have worked very hard on this unit and I am very excited to see the testing data reflect their hard work.
Our next unit is called "It's A Job" where students will learn parts of speech and sentence structure. This will fulfill requirements of Common Core as well as equip students with vitally important life-skills of writing and that will help them in their future. The final project will be a life-sized poster describing a job where students will apply their newly-acquired knowledge to real-life application. The poster will be done in groups and all work can be completed in class.
This week, I will give students a pre-test on parts of speech. Remember that pre-test scores will appear on PowerSchool but will NOT count against your student's grade. The test helps me know what students already know so I can better cater my instruction to them individually. Speaking of grades, Progress Reports will come home on Monday. Students will be required to obtain parent/guardian signatures on the report and return it by Wednesday, September 19th. This lets me know that everyone is aware of grades and help us all work to facilitate your student's success.
Please note that Wednesday is Library Day. I am offering an incentive program where students get a signature in their planner for each week they bring a book to read to the library and do NOT have a fine. 10 signatures = an extra drawing in the monthly Robins' Raffle. If your student has a fine, they will receive a note and be asked to call, email or text you from school to help remind them. This will increase their ability to be responsible and eliminate unnecessary library fines.
On Wednesday, we also use Scholastic Scope Magazines. These give us weekly reading comprehension practice and they are simply FUN! This week we will do an in-class Reader's Theater based on a Sherlock Holmes story. The students learned about an exciting new YA Sherlock Holmes series by Andrew Lane last week in our library and we just did our Book-to-Film unit so I thought this one would be perfect.
Every Monday, I check student planners to see if they have done their weekly reading (30 mins.a day, five days a week), have written down our weekly calendar and have a parent/guardian signature. This is vitally important to teach your student the life-skill of organization and planning. This is a skill that can be transferred to every part of their lives. Additionally, this specific assignment directly affects their citizenship. A few weeks of a "0" score sadly leads to a "U" and the consequences that come with it. Please, please support your student in this activity.
Other highlights this week include a Monday-Write on sequence (excellent practice for book reports), a valuable lesson on note-taking from the talented Mrs. Haws and a fun lesson/activity on editing marks to prepare students for writing and peer editing throughout the year. Also, book orders are due on Monday, September 17th. You can send a check to Scholastic with your student or order online directly from the blog. Utah-in-the-News is posted on the blog, please read the details and support your student in this important informational text activity.
Thank you again for your interest and support. I have the BEST group of students and every day with them is a pleasure! I am continually amazed by their intelligence, good humor and great attitudes. Have a wonderful week and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. --Mrs. Robins :)

Super Gecko Day on Friday, September 13th
Last Friday, September 13th, was our first Language Arts Super Gecko Day and it was spectacular! A Super Gecko Day is when a department offers an enriching, content-related day for ALL students as a way to celebrate learning. Mrs. Leany, Mr. Rarick and I put in many hours in preparation for this fun event and it certainly paid off in spades.
The fun day began with all students attending an assembly during 1st or 2nd periods. We were fortunate to have Doug Osmond with us presenting the Michael Vey Book Tour. The Michael Vey series (two books are written so far)by Richard Paul Evans, is about a group of teens who were affected by an experimental machine which was in the hospital when they were born. They were given the ability to harness and use electricity in a variety of ways. Michael Vey, the main character, is the consummate underdog who finds the greatness within him to make friends and save the world. I have read both books and they are fantastic! Along with talking about the books, Doug Osmond also focused on the neurological condition, Turrets Syndrome (which both Richard Paul Evans, Osmond's son and Michael Vey have), believing in yourself and improving yourself through reading. The assembly ended with a very fun trivia game where ten students displayed their amazing knowledge on popular YA books. A special pat-on-the-back to Nate Chatelain, Zach Goodman, Tucker Lameroux and Natalie Gunn who did the Robins' classes proud!
I was so proud of our students. They were respectful, knowledgeable and really had a great time. Here a few pictures. I took a bunch of photos as well as video footage of the presentation which I will post on the blog soon.

I was so proud of our students. They were respectful, knowledgeable and really had a great time. Here a few pictures. I took a bunch of photos as well as video footage of the presentation which I will post on the blog soon.
Go Tucker!
Go Nate!
Thank you to the talented Doug Osmond!
The day continued with 3rd, 5th and 6th periods participating in the grand finale of our Book-to-Film Festival: Film Reel Fun. Groups were placed together and asked to complete a giant film reel where each film cell required the students to write about and draw something from their Book-to-Film Book focusing on either genre, setting, characters, plot or theme. The students worked so well together and created some fabulous works of art & writing which will be displayed in our lunch room for all students to enjoy.
By the end of the day, I was exhausted but so very proud of my amazing students. I am so grateful for the privilege of being a teacher to students who are so talented and hard-working. Every day at school is a pleasure and I enjoy every minute I spend with them. Lava Ridge is an amazing school as well. I am continually impressed and grateful to be part of a school-wide team so focused on student achievement and success! Here is a preview of MANY pictures yet to come. :)
My personal favorite picture: Kameron and Justin were exhausted from so much literary fun!

Week 5 Outline
It's been such a great school year, I hope the students are enjoying our classes as much as I am! This will be the concluding week of our Book-to-Film Unit. I feel the students are getting a good grasp on critical thinking through comparing and contrasting book and film media. I'll walk students through more book/film compare and contrast activities as well as give them time in class to work on their Book Reports.
Encourage your student to finish reading their book and watch the movie based on their book.
Remember the Book-to-Film Book Report is due September 26th, but I'll reward early work with an extra entry into the Monthly Drawing. The Book Report will need to have the following parts included, I'll be sure to give the students all they need:
Front: Book-to-Film Book Report Rubric
Middle: The Book-to-Film Book Report Form (we are making it in class)
Back: The Pre-Writing Venn Diagrams (4 total on 2 papers they will get in class)
This Friday is the Language Arts Super Gecko Day for all students! Super Gecko Days only occur twice a year for each department, so be sure your student is in attendance on Friday. We will be hosting Richard Paul Evans' "Michael Vey" Book Tour during periods 1 & 2. Language Arts students will be excused from their regular classes to attend. During Periods 3, 5 and 6, students will participate in Film Reel Fun!
Thanks again for your encouragement and support and have a fantastic week!

Book to Film Permission Slip
It's been a great week at school, we have been moving forward on our Book to Film Unit and students have been learning to compare and contrast different forms of media to increase their critical thinking skills. I am still missing permission slips from some students. I have sent emails to parents/guardians reminding them that all permission slips need to be turned in by Monday. If you need another form, I am placing one below that you are welcome to print out. Thank you for your continued support!
Book to Movie Book
Report Assignment
Dear Parents,
To help spark an interest in reading and to include a higher
level of analysis as directed by the new Common Core, our 7th grade
Language Arts department has started the year off with a “Book to Movie” Festival.
The final activity in this unit is to have each student write a
compare/contrast book report (we will provide the format/form), focusing on the
book of their choice and the movie based upon that book. Although we have made all the books/movies in
our own libraries available, there are many, many more books that have been
made into movies.
This is where we need your help and approval. Please help your student choose a book/movie
that meets your family’s standards. Please, no “R” movies. The key to a
successful experience is parent involvement and approval.
This assignment will be due
September 26, 2012. If you have any questions, please contact us
via e-mail.
Thanks for your support,
Kathryn Leany, (kleany@lavaridge.net)
Rachel Robins, (rrobins@lavaridge.net)

Week 4 Outline
We had a fantastic week last week, I feel the students are understanding the concepts, have our class procedures down and overall, have a great attitude. Our first Utah-in-the-News presenters did a fine job and sat the bar high for the rest of the trimester. We really enjoyed the first monthly Robins Raffle and our very first Gecko Time. I hope the students see how fun it is to get their work complete and reap the rewards.
I hope you have all enjoyed a long weekend! I'm excited to see everyone tomorrow and continue our Book-to-Film Compare/Contrast Unit. The students will get good, solid practice this week and I will equip them with the tools to successfully complete their Book-to-Film Book Report. Remember this report is due September 26th. I plan on giving students time to work on the report next week but they may need to finish at home. Remember to check the blog for updates. I appreciate the continued support and encouragement!
Have a fabulous week!
